Acid in the ants' bodies is making the birds go bananas

British seagulls have recently become interested in spirituality and altered states of consciousness. Otherwise put, they've turned into drunks.

Wildlife researchers say that, in the aftermath of a recent heat wave, England's southwest is teeming with flying ants, which the seagulls eat.

The problem is that these ants secrete a formic acid that messes up the birds' brains, making them act less like seagulls and more like drunks.

Live Science reports that birds that gulp down one too many flying ants are uncoordinated, hence the fact that they tend to fly into buildings and fail to get out of the way of cars in time.

What's more, the formic acid appears to lower their inhibitions, meaning that the birds no longer shy away from stealing food straight out of people's hands.

Maybe it's time somebody set up an intervention.
