The Brit Awards, the biggest pop event of the year in the UK, took place just a few hours ago and, quite as expected, Welsh singer and songwriter Duffy was crowned the biggest star of the year, taking home no less than three statuettes. It was a glamorous and fun night, the local media is reporting, that was not short of surprises and special appearances either.

“I don’t mean to be greedy! It’s a real honor to be here. I don’t know what this means, but it’s a good job my mum didn’t have a boy.” Duffy said in one of her acceptance speeches, as she struggled to fight back the tears. And a real honor it was, as she was voted as winner in three major categories, which, for a performer who one year ago was a virtual unknown, is an amazing feat. Duffy took home awards for Best British Female Singer, Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Album.

Other winners included stunner Katy Perry, who took home the coveted statuette for Best International Female. “I’m so sick right now, but they said I should show up for the Brits because something special could happen. Obviously, I have worked really hard because I want to die now.” the singer told as she was handed her award. British pop band Girls Aloud were equally happy to win something on the night of the awards, taking home the Best British Single for “The Promise,” their first win in many years.

Coldplay, four-time nominee, lost to Duffy in the Best Album category, although the band won the award every time they put out a new record, until this year. The Pet Shop Boys also got to take home an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music – accordingly, they ended the show with a collage of some of their greatest hits, while also being joined on stage by eccentric singer Lady GaGa.

Other performers included presenter Kylie Minogue, who dazzled the audience in no less than six different outfits, Take That, Estelle and the big winner of the night, Duffy herself. Below is a complete list of all the winners of the Brit Awards 2009 in all the major categories.

- British Album: Duffy, “Rockferry” - British Male Solo Artist: Paul Weller - British Female Artist: Duffy - British Breakthrough Act: Duffy - British Group: Elbow - Live Act: Iron Maiden - International Album: Kings of Leon, “Only By The Night” - International Male Solo Artist: Jay Z - International Female Solo Artist: Katy Perry - International Group: Kings of Leon - Outstanding Music Contribution: Pet Shop Boys
