It’s only natural for a woman to want everything to be perfect on what is supposed to be the biggest day of her life, her wedding day. Because of this, countless hours are spent preparing every little detail, from flower arrangements to guest seating and the menu. However, it would seem brides also put a lot of consideration into choosing their bridesmaids, a recent poll cited by The Telegraph informs.

Any bridesmaid would simply not do and, in the case of those brides who choose more bridesmaids who are not necessarily very dear and close friends, they tend to choose fatter women to stand besides them in church. The explanation is understandably very simple: just like those women who choose a heavier friend for outings at night or shopping sprees, brides choose fatter bridesmaids because, this way, they’re making themselves look better.

“One in three engaged British women admitted that they would choose an overweight friend to be their bridesmaid in order to make them look comparatively slimmer. Despite this many brides still profess themselves unhappy with their appearance in their wedding pictures, with two in five saying they felt insecure alongside slimmer guests. Results from a survey by diet plan Slim-Fast revealed that almost fifty per cent of brides diet before their wedding day, along with one fifth of female guests. Many said buying a new outfit was a good way to boost self confidence, while 40 per cent said new shoes made them feel better about their appearance,” the British publication says.

A nutritionist for the company, Fiona Hunter, explains this by the huge pressure brides are under for the big day. “Women are obviously feeling such pressure to look good on their big day that they’re resorting to selecting bridesmaids larger than themselves. It’s very sad and a real shame. Looking at these statistics, it seems to be a worrying new trend,” she says. Sad as it is, if this is trend is picking up, chances of doing anything to stop it are slim.

Another trend that has been around for long is that of taking a female friend or female acquaintance on an outing, with the same purpose of making oneself look better by comparison. Both are considered cheap tricks and perhaps few women would admit to using them in front of strangers – but they’re norm with countless ladies, it would seem.
