Over the upcoming period, Brazilian oil giant Petrobras plans on investing large amounts of money in IT and cybersecurity. This year alone, the company wants to spend R$ 4 billion ($1.8 billion / €1.3 billion). Another R$ 21.2 billion ($9.5 billion / €7 billion) will be invested through 2017.

“At Petrobras, from the moment we walked in the company, we have a culture of information security,” said Petrobras President Maria das Graças Silva Foster, cited by Scandinavian Oil-Gas Magazine.

Graça Foster has revealed that a large number of potentially malicious emails are blocked each month by the company. For instance, of the 195 million emails sent to Petrobras systems between August 9 and September 9, only 16.5 million reached their destination.

She also highlighted the fact that the company’s most sensitive data is stored in an ultra-secure Data Processing Center. Access to this center is controlled with biometrics.

The announcement that Petrobras will heavily invest in cybersecurity comes shortly after documents leaked by Edward Snowden revealed that the company had been targeted by the NSA.
