That Sony would eventually unleash one or more TVs with support for 4K resolution was a given, and often mentioned in the press over the past several months, and even back in 2012. Now, the company has acted on its promises.

4K is a term used to refer to display resolutions of 3840 x 2160 pixels or greater. 3840 x 2160 is the one that most UHD TVs have adopted (UHD stands for ultra high definition).

Sony has decided to go ahead and start accepting orders for the 55-inch BRAVIA X9, as well as for the 65-inch version.

The display will not start shipping until the middle of June, four weeks from now, but the time in-between will be good for amassing interest.

The former bears a price of €4500 / $4500 (no matter what exchange rates say), while the latter is at €7,000 / $7,000.

Sony's X9 4K TV boasts a Sony-exclusive technology called Triluminos Display, which ensures a wide palette of realistic colors.

Sound isn't ignored though, thanks to assets like Signal-to-Sound architecture (makes sound more realistic without overpowering dialogue).

Integrated NFC (near field communication) is another thing. It allows a smartphone's or tablet's screen to be mirrored on it. Basically, it's a substitute for streaming through HDMI or other video ports (which phones lack).

The NFC could prove particularly useful when a visitor has a good video, music or other material to share it with the host and whoever else is present. It definitely beats having to use a PC and/or an external storage device (flash drive, portable SSD/HDD), etc.

Oddly enough, the Sony press release doesn't mention many other Smart TV features. Maybe the company intends for media players or other entertainment systems to be bought along with it, since anyone who can afford one of these TVs will no doubt have money for anything else they could want.
