According to the conclusions of a new scientific study, it would appear that obese adolescents exhibit impaired brain functions, compared to their peers who are of normal weight. The same correlation exists for a condition called metabolic syndrome (MetS).

The fact that the two conditions cause cognitive and brain impairments was discovered by researchers at the New York University School of Medicine, coordinated by lead investigator Dr. Antonio Convit.

“The kids with MetS took longer to do tasks, could not read as well and had poorer math scores. These findings indicate that kids with MetS do not perform well on things that are very relevant to school performance,” he explains.

Details of the investigation – which was conducted with support from the US National Institutes of Health – were published in the latest online issue of the esteemed medical journal Pediatrics.
