Brad Pitt remains one of the most high-profile stars to speak out in favor of marriage equality. In a new statement to People after New York legalized same-gender marriages, the actor reaffirms his stand on equality, saying everyone should be free to marry whomever they love, no matter the state they live in.

In doing so, Pitt confirms that he remains just as outspoken on marriage equality as he was several years ago, when he revealed he and partner of many years Angelina Jolie would not marry until everyone else could freely.

“It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens,” Brad says, praising the decision to legalize same-gender marriage here.

However, this is just the beginning, Brad underlines.

“But it is each American’s Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit,” the actor explains.

Saying that marriage between men or between two women is not legal is like telling them who to love, and you simply can’t dictate these things, Brad believes.

“No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage,” he states.

Despite his older promise that he and Jolie would not marry until the gays could also do so legally in their state, in a recent interview, Brad revealed that there has been some talk about tying the knot in the Jolie-Pitt household.

“The kids ask about marriage. It’s meaning more and more to them. So it’s something we’ve got to look at,” he said while promoting his Cannes-winning film “Tree of Life.”

As expected, his words went around the world just hours after they came out in print, prompting many tabloids to speculate on a possible wedding date and other ceremony-related events.
