The Box application for Android devices has been updated to version 2.4 today, with a nice range of enhancements inside aimed at providing users with a better experience while on the go.

At the same time, the new application flavor provides users with some new means to get involved in the development process.

As part of the new update, users will enjoy better navigation and browsing in the app, especially when it comes to images.

“We know that images (*.jpg files) are uploaded 5X more often than the next most common file type (*.pdf files), so we wanted to create a buttery smooth experience for those of you browsing through all those photos,” Box explains in a blog post.

The process involved a complete overhauling of the photo previewing capabilities of the application, but the results should impress all users, the company notes.

Those who install the new application release will see smoother transitions between levels, as well as a fading effect for thumbnail icons when navigating through folders

“The biggest improvements have been made to our file preview pages. We removed a lot of the extra icons covering up your images by shifting functionality back into the action bar and submenus,” the blog post explains.

Furthermore, the new version of Box for Android brings even smoother swiping between pictures in a folder, due to the fact that the app now uses lower resolution versions of images when in transition. The full resolution versions are loaded only when the user pauses on one.

As mentioned above, there is also a new way to help with the development of the app, and users will be prompted to sign up to try new features.

“If you love Box for Android and want to help test out new features before they are made available to the general public, feel free to enroll in our new alpha testing channel! It’s a two step-process,” the company explains.

For that, users will need to join a Google Group using the same account as in the Google Play Store, then they will have to opt-in to receive alpha channel updates. They can also leave the group if they want to, at the same link above.

“By opting in, the Google Play store will automatically deliver updates to your currently-installed Box for Android app that will contain experimental features. Your usage of these new features will be measured and impact how we build and deliver them for everyone else,” the blog post continues.
