The title has not yet been officially announced

The teams at developer Gearbox and publisher Take Two seem to be very excited with the next title in the Borderlands series, which is at the moment deep in the development process but has not been officially announced to the public.

During the presentation of the financial results for the past quarter, Randy Pitchford, the chief executive officer of the studio, has said that the game is “the big one” when it comes to the future of the series.

Karl Slatoff, the president of Take Two, added during the earnings call that is fully transcribed at SeekingAlpha that the title was being created specifically for the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

It seems that there are no plans to launch the title on the last generation of devices from Sony and Microsoft, and no comment has been offered on whether a PC version will be introduced, maybe at a later date.

It’s interesting to note that neither Gearbox nor Take Two referred to the title as Borderlands 3, which might mean that they are exploring alternative names and that the “big one” term might be linked to the jump to new consoles rather than the story the title will tell.

The fact that the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 are no longer supported might be a problem because, while modern devices have managed to impress in terms of hardware sales, the attach rate for video games has been lower than many analysts were expecting.

The new Borderlands needs some new ideas

The most recent entry in the Borderlands series, called The Pre-Sequel, was created by 2K Australia and was mostly criticized for the fact that it did not introduce too many new elements to the series, even if it tried to spice up the gameplay by moving the action to the moon of Pandora.

A new title from Gearbox will need to surprise long-term fans and to also expand the mythology of the series in significant ways.

Until more information on Borderlands 3 is offered, the community will get access to the Handsome Collection, which includes re-mastered versions of the previous two launched titles and is set to arrive on the Xbox One and the PS4 on March 24.
