ABI Research predicts that 32 million Bluetooth enabled sports fitness devices will ship in 2013, and that many more will be bought in 2014.

Bluetooth SIG (the Bluetooth Special Interests Group) expects its latest iteration of the wireless standard to help that vision be achieved.

In fact, Bluetooth wireless technology is expected to be one of the major reasons why this happens, not just a peripheral contributing factor.

That said, the Bluetooth Smart technology is expected to power many things next year, not just watches and running shoes but also high-tech bracelets, gloves and even hats.

They will all capture data and send it to a smartphone or tablet to be processed. Smartwatches will even be able to process some of it alone, and relay voice and/or video calls.

All in all, there should be a rise of 67% in wearable device shipments.
