The new From Software title rewards veterans

From Software, the developer of hit role-playing experiences like Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, has talked about the relationship those titles have with its newest upcoming game, Bloodborne, and how, while the title is a standalone experience, veterans will find plenty of great references to the old ones.

From Software has made a name for itself in recent years by delivering challenging RPGs to gamers from around the world in the form of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2, each offering a medieval fantasy experience filled with powerful enemies and tough adventures for players to complete.

Bloodborne is similar to but also different from the old titles

Its next big project is Bloodborne, which is being developed alongside Sony's Japan studio, and while it's still going to be a challenging RPG, there are some key differences, according to From Software's Producer Masaaki Yamagiwa, who has talked with PSLS about the upcoming game.

"Well, it’s an action RPG," he says about the relationship between Bloodborne and the Souls titles. "The basic game format is similar to those, if you want to look at it that way, but everything else from story to battle system is different. Bloodborne is its own game."

Bloodborne has more content than Demon's Souls

In terms of a direct comparison, Yamagiwa says that Bloodborne is more similar to Demon's Souls, but in general it will have even more content than the old experience.

"Well, Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls are different games from each other, too. But when I introduced this game earlier, I meant that it was a closer to Demon’s Souls than Dark Souls. But again, that was me and my team, but a different publisher, so they’re still two different games."

"Just like Demon’s Souls, it really depends on the player’s skill. It’s hard to say. But we can say that the total game volume is bigger than Demon’s Souls."

The story plays a bigger role than in previous games

Last but not least, the story will also play a bigger role in Bloodborne, as players are no longer thrown out into the world to explore things without any reasoning or explanation. Instead, Yamagiwa says, they'll have a mystery to solve and a background story to explore. However, players shouldn't worry about the game focusing on story more than gameplay, as battles will still be tough.

Bloodborne is set to debut in early February of 2015 exclusively for the PS4 platform from Sony.
