The famous BloodRayne franchise is set to be revived by Majesco, as the company has announced that it will be unleashing BloodRayne: Betrayal onto the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms this summer.

The famous series, featuring the very attractive Rayne, a half vampire, half human girl, has been dormant since 2004, when BloodRayne 2 appeared for the PlayStation 2.

New titles were rumored time and time again, but that speculation never manifested itself in any concrete projects.

Now, Betrayal will be developed by WayForward, the studio behind titles like the successful Contra 4, which appeared for the DS in 2007, and will be released this summer as a downloadable game for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

However, the game won't follow the 3D hack and slash mechanics from the first two titles, as it's going to be a side-scrolling 2D platformer.

"BloodRayne: Betrayal delivers the action-packed experience franchise fans have been waiting for in a digital format that's also accessible for new players unfamiliar with Rayne's over-the-top, stylized gameplay," said Majesco boss Jesse Sutton in a statement to CVG.

BloodRayne: Betrayal will see Rayne engage in one final mission after the adventures in the last game, where she teams up with a mysterious new friend in order to stop an evil vampire massacre.

The title, according to Majesco, is filled with new characters, environmental puzzles and a variety of weapons that can be wielded by Rayne through its story in order to dispose of her enemies.

A teaser trailer for BloodRayne: Betrayal has also been revealed, but don't expect any solid details to be spilled, as it just showcases a few comic-book like sketches, as well as the iconic silhouette of the Rayne and the logo of the long-running franchise.
