Right now the studio is focusing on Far Cry 4 but it's open to a wacky expansion

A Far Cry 4 spinoff in the same outlandish vein as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon might appear at some point in time, as Ubisoft is keen on allowing its internal teams time to flex their creative muscles after building big titles.

Far Cry 3 appeared in December of 2012 and delighted millions of fans with a huge open world, top-notch shooter mechanics, and plenty of intense adventures starring some truly iconic characters, such as Vaas, one of the main antagonists.

With Far Cry 4, Ubisoft is going into another direction, featuring a completely different environment, in the form of Kyrat, a fictional country within the Himalaya mountain range, and a new villain, a dictator called Pagan Min.

Even so, Ubisoft isn't ruling out the creation of a new DLC expansion in the same vein as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, especially since the whole team had a lot of fun creating the experience after Far Cry 3 was completed.

"They had a ton of fun with it," Far Cry 4 Narrative Director Mark Thompson told RPS. "The team loved making it. Everyone was so hyped when they made that game, so I know there’s a lot of voices inside the studio that want to see [Far Cry 4: Blood Dragon] made."

Thompson even goes so far as to emphasize that, if a similar DLC appeared, it probably wouldn’t use any of the things from the original Blood Dragon, as that would be too easy and Ubisoft wants a challenge.

"I think given the people that I know on the team and on the brand [it seems unlikely that it'd just be a direct sequel to Blood Dragon]. We never do the easy thing, so I think a direct sequel to Blood Dragon with the same type of universe and characters."

With Far Cry 4, Ubisoft could have gone the easy way and just recycled the island setting or certain characters, like Vaas, but it decided that innovation was needed.

"I mean, it didn’t happen with Far Cry 4, right? We moved to a completely different part of the world. We’ve had to rebuild, throw away stuff we had and build new things. Even characters.

"Some people were like, 'Why are you even wasting time trying to find a new antagonist? Why not just use Vaas again?' And we were like, 'Eh, he was cool but we want to make Far Cry 4 different. It’s a different world, a different story. We want different characters to say different things about the world they’re in'."

As such, while a Blood Dragon-like expansion for Far Cry 4 might appear, don't expect it to once again feature the kitschy neon-colored 1980s sci-fi vibe that made the original such a hit.
