Not much to scrutinize

There's a new splash screen up at the Blizzard's home page and it's clear that the soon to merge with Activision company is preparing for something big. The only question now is how big and how it will affect gamers.

The new splash screen does not show much but it's clearly designed to turn on the rumor machine while Blizzard waits for the upcoming Worldwide Invitational to make an official announcement. Thank God that the invitational is just one week away, taking place on June 28 and June 29.

The most talked about speculation is that the teaser splash page is pointing the finger at a Diablo game, which would be the third in the series. There has been a boat load of speculations recently about a new Diablo game, but there's not one shred of evidence that Blizzard is working or even thinking of working on such a title. The image on the splash page itself does not hint at Diablo, with its weird crystals reflecting some sort of otherworldly light.

The pessimists are saying that the teaser is just referring to the long announced Wrath of the Lich King expansion for the MMO World of Warcraft and that at the upcoming event, Blizzard will unveil more details regarding the expansion and set a firm release date for it. The image is just a placeholder that will be changed with the official box art once the announcement is made. It could also be something linked to Starcraft II and an announcement regarding that game.

My guess? Blizzard has finally got around to making the Ghost game, that stealth third person action title based on the Starcraft universe that enjoyed so much press attention a few years back. I know the picture does not point at Ghost in any way but if Blizzard really wants to please some fans, a Ghost related announcement is surely the right way to go.
