Blizzard Entertainment has just released all the models employed in Warcraft 3 for Starcraft 2 modders to use however they see fit.

The news comes from an official post on the Battle.net forums, stating that everything, from the famous heroes of the four in-game races, to all the neutral creeps and miscellaneous doodads, is now available for Starcraft 2 modders to enjoy.

"We are so excited to see what our community is going to make that we wanted to give you a head start. Once these assets become available to the public, we are going to spotlight the best content in what we are calling, 'Memories of War.' The PTR is your chance to start playing with your new tools and to start making amazing experiences," the announcement reads.

In addition to all the character models and animations, all of Warcraft 3's spell effects, music, ambient sounds, and custom interfaces have been made public, so the Arcade community can simply recreate the beloved fantasy real-time strategy game in the superior Starcraft 2 engine.

It's time to patiently wait for Warcraft 4 to pop up, or for some of the unvisited segments of the extensive game lore to be painstakingly recreated by fans.

Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos was released back in 2002, and its expansion, The Frozen Throne, one year after, so everything is pretty low definition by today's standards, but that doesn't mean that the announcement isn't exciting.

Everyone is secretly hoping for Warcraft 4

An announcement regarding Warcraft 4 would be even more exciting, but it would be really hard to top Warcraft 3, even for Blizzard. In any case, many gamers are no doubt hoping that the company is considering bringing the fantasy franchise into the spotlight once again, after more than 10 years of peace and quiet.

The Warcraft franchise just turned 20 at the end of last year, as Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the first entry in the real-time strategy series, was released in November 1994. It was followed by Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness one year later.

Due to the fact that the company chose to ignore the franchise's roots and devote its efforts to its massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft in recent years, some fans decided to start working on a total conversion of Starcraft 2, that would bring the fantasy universe to life once again.

In the meantime, enjoy the incoming wave of new Arcade maps.
