BlackLining is an Xtension for QuarkXPress 7, which allows retaining a complete audit trail of all changes made to text. Whether it's finance, legal, or other exact documentation fields you are working in, the tool is a must-have for QuarkXpress users, says Xchange International.

Tracking different revision cycles is the most important ability of BlackLining. This unique feature makes it possible for users to see a complete history of all the text changes made to a document as it passes through the revision process, by choosing different revision cycles. If a run of text, or word or letter is deleted, it will be marked as "Struck-Through." A special characters' feature allows a live header of a document to be created. Should this feature be used on a master page, all pages can have document information such as name, date and time, but also BlackLining revision numbers and a checksum.

Also useful for billing or auditing is a history file record. The actions are moved in a document’s history, which can be printed or exported. Some of the main features BlackLining boasts are listed below:

• deleted text can be shown as strike-through or by caret mark; • up to 98 revision levels can be recorded; • through the active revision display, a true history of the document can be shown; • special characters allow a live header to be built for displaying job information; • merge, remove, and erase functions for BlackLining marks at all levels; • compatibility for Acrobat Distiller PDF drivers; • generate and print a checksum on the same line as the document name when printing with registration marks (checksum is a unique number generated for the page, and if the items on the page differ from one print session to the next, then the number will be different); • export all text from a document; • Open architecture allows ease of interface with other developers and customization.

BlackLining for Quark 7 is available under the form of an upgrade from Quark 6 for £535.00. It is a Universal Binary, good for both PPC and Intel-based machines. A demo version of BlackLining is also available.
