Research in Motion has just announced the availability of an important software update for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

According to RIM, BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.07.3312 includes an updated version of Adobe Flash Player, which was released by Adobe on September 21.

The latest version of Adobe Flash Player addresses issues that can potentially affect any PC, tablet, or any other device that runs an operating system with support for Adobe Flash.

Even though Research in Motion stated that it did not receive any reports regarding Flash-related issues with the BlackBerry PlayBook, the company strongly recommends PlayBook tablet users to update to the newest version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS to avoid being affected by these issues.

Basically, any BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that uses software versions 1.0.7.2942 and earlier could potentially be susceptible to remote code execution.

According to Adobe, “successful exploitation of any of these issues requires an attacker to craft Adobe Flash content in a stand alone Adobe Flash (.swf) application or embed Adobe Flash content in a website and then persuade the user to access the Adobe Flash content by clicking a link to the content in an email message or on a webpage.”

BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users who did not receive a software update notification can manually check for the upgrade by going in the settings menu and selecting the Software Updates option.

However, RIM fans who acquire and activate a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet on or after October 6 should not be worried about not getting the update, as the devices will automatically be updated to version 1.07.3312 or newer.

RIM also said that users with BlackBerry PlayBook tablets that run v1.0.7.2942 or higher of the operating system will only get the Adobe Flash update, which is expected to take a few minutes to download and install.
