Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion has just announced the availability of a maintenance release for the BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse v1.3.

The new release was based on the feedback RIM received from the developer community, and comes with improved simulator support for computers running Windows 7 64-bit.

The handset vendor made available the BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse v1.3 several months ago, with support for the latest Eclipse version 3.6 (Helios), and with an upgraded Eclipse Software Update for the BlackBerry Java SDK v6.0.

The tool was designed so as to offer increased help with debugging performance. Moreover, it simplifies the access and installation of SDKs, and offers new ways to distribute plug-ins.

The new flavor of BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse v1.3 includes features like:

- Eclipse Helios (3.6) support for the latest Eclipse support - BlackBerry Development Eclipse Perspective that better organizes BlackBerry development views and menus for easier access - New Application Wizards to get new BlackBerry smartphone applications up and running quicker - Dynamic and re-arranged Getting Started Welcome Page to provide relevant and updated information for BlackBerry Java development - Update Notification to let you know when new versions are available for download - Improved debugger performance for faster breakpoints and evaluation - MacOS X Java Plug-in for Eclipse feature parity.

Not too long ago, RIM announced that it would offer an update site for the Java Plug-in for Eclipse 1.3 and BlackBerry WebWorks on Eclipse no more, though it would maintain update sites available for component pack downloads.

Those developers who already have BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse v1.3.0 installed should replace it with the new maintanance update, the handset vendor notes. The update is specifically recommended to those who use Windows Phone 7.

“The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse is an Eclipse plug-in that improves productivity by providing an integrated BlackBerry smartphone specific development, debugging and simulation workflow. The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse has been updated to better fit within the Eclipse environment, making it easier to develop in Eclipse,” RIM notes on its website.

The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse v1.3 MR (update Mar 4, 2011) is available for download from Softpedia too, via this link.
