An African American college student trying to buy an expensive belt at Barneys in New York City has been slapped with an arrest.

The NY Post describes that 19-year-old Trayon Christian lives in Queens and studies at the NYC College of Technology.

He intended to buy a $350 (€254) Salvatore Ferragamo belt at the Madison Avenue store. He explains that he has got the money by saving from his part time job.

He has sued the department store for being grabbed by police officers and arrested outside the store. The clerk apparently alerted police after doubting that the transaction was fraudulent.

He was reportedly asked “how a young black man such as himself could afford to purchase such an expensive belt,” the suit notes. His attorney, Michael Palillo, is claiming racial profiling.
