14 DAY TRIAL // Black Lab Linux, a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS "Trusty Tahr" that is using a customized GNOME desktop, has just received a new upgrade pack and numerous packages have been upgraded.
This is not the first upgrade pack for the Black Lab Professional Desktop and it looks like it might not be the last either. The developers have been updating many of the most important applications, including stuff like Firefox and Thunderbird, although users who already have this OS installed won't have to do anything extra.
Black Lab Linux also features a KDE flavor for this operating system and the makers of the distro have been working very hard to improve upon the systems requirements. This is important for KDE users, which might feel the need for more memory from time to time.
Black Lab Linux is all about updated packages
Not all system upgrades bring new features and it's usually stuff that you would expect anyway, but the devs have made at least one change that was pretty unexpected. The system is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which in turn uses Linux kernel 3.13.0-45 , but the Black Lab Linux devs offer users the chance to upgrade to Linux kernel 3.18.4.
"Black Lab Pro Desktop 6.0 SR3 is a major upgrade to our pro desktop line of distributions. With this release we worked on a few issues with memory consumption, security and speed. With the Black Lab Pro Desktop we deliver it in two different desktops, KDE and GNOME Shell. The KDE release boots only consuming 480 mb of RAM and the GNOME Shell release boots using only 545 mb of RAM," reads the blog entry.
Users can expect to find GNOME Shell 3.10.4, KDE 4.14.2, Firefox 35.0.1, Thunderbird 31.4, GTK+ 3.14, QT 5, and quite a few other updates.
