Before the Super Bowl, the Black Eyed Peas said their halftime performance would be something people will remember them by, an experience the likes of which the world has never seen. Said and done.

As the video below will confirm, the BEP took to the stage to put on a show that relied as much on visual effects (lighting) as it did on the well-known beats of their biggest hits. On the actual singing, not so much.

Examiner points out that the performance was more a visual experience, with fans present at the event being sucked into this futuristic world of light and sound / beats.

Tens of backup dancers with illuminated suits and a very complex stage setting made it possible for the BEP to change the “tone” of the stage according to each song they performed.

To make matters even more interesting, they also had famed guitarist Slash from Guns ‘n Roses pop up on the stage, and Fergie doing her own version of “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” one of the most iconic tracks from the band.

Usher also made a brief appearance for a spot of singing and dancing – but more of the latter – but, without a doubt, this was all about the Black Eyed Peas.

“The four members of the group also lit up in their own ways. Fergie sparkled with the top half of her outfit flashing softly and the other three members had patches and strings of light that worked at different times making the stage lit up as the music was performed,” Examiner writes.

“The futuristic costumes also had the silver base to help deflect the light given off into the stands and be seen on television,” the e-zine notes.

While there’s no disputing that the Black Eyed Peas put on an amazing display of visuals, as for the actual singing, that left a lot to be desired.

Aside from some minor glitches with their microphones and the audio, it would seem that fans would rather the BEP sang live as rarely as possible – or so it would seem from what they’re saying on Twitter.

“My ancestors roamed for 1000 years and escaped a Russian shtetl so that Will.i.am could say Mazel tov at the Super Bowl,” twitterer tannenbaumr writes.

“I think we now know how to get Mubarak to leave,” AntDeRosa tweets, referring to the ongoing protests in Egypt. JBFlint writes “I bet those 400 fans who didn’t get seats don’t feel so bad right now.”

pbump says that the world should remember that “for one glorious moment, Fergie’s mic wasn’t working,” while alexblagg cracks a joke at the evil the BEP could do to the world: “I think if they sacrifice Justin Bieber, the Black Eyed Peas can bring forth the immortal Lord Baal.”
