A few days ago, security researcher Ravi Borgaonkar demonstrated how USSD codes could be leveraged by cybercriminals to wipe the phones of Android users via malicious WAP Push SMSs, QR codes, near-field communications (NFC) and websites.

Samsung – whose Android devices were said to be the most affected by the vulnerability exploited in the attack - has already begun addressing the issue, but in the meantime, Bitdefender has released its own free protection tool.

Bitdefender Wipe Stopper is designed to alert Android users in case it detects attempts to execute USSD commands.

“The moment the vulnerability came to light, Bitdefender set some of the best minds in the industry to working. We came up with the best solution available – Bitdefender Wipe Stopper. It’s free, so we recommend pretty much every Android owner use it,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Researcher Alexandru Balan.
