Over the weekend, posts on Twitter warned that Bitcoin payment processor BitPay was hacked, and that the attackers stole around $80 million (€59 million) worth of Bitcoins. The company has denied the allegations.

Discussions on the topic were started on both Reddit and BitcoinTalk. BitPay is very upset about the fake story. The company believes Twitter user @petertwynn (Peter Wynn) was the first to post the false information about BitPay being hacked.

“This is completely fake. All BitPay systems are secure and nothing is wrong. Also, none of these transactions are related to BitPay. BitPay does not control any of the inputs on these transactions, nor does BitPay own the outputs of these transactions,” the Bitcoin payment processor’s representatives noted.

Furthermore, they threaten to take legal action against Wynn and others who intentionally spread the false information.

Wynn has deleted the tweet that read “Attention everyone-- bit pay been hacked!! Any money from them is being stolen right now.” He claims that he had picked up the “news” from Reddit, and that he only wanted to warn people about their Bitcoins being stolen.

The posts on Reddit and Bitcoin Talk have been updated to clarify that it’s a false alarm.
