BioWare has talked a bit more about the new Mass Effect game that received some actual concept footage earlier this week at E3 2014, confirming that it makes use of amazing technology and that it will have nods and references to the Commander Shepard trilogy of games.

The Mass Effect series has seen the release of three classic titles that focused on the saga of the main character, Commander Shepard, and his war against the alien Reapers.

Currently, BioWare's Montreal studio is busy working on a new Mass Effect game that won't star Shepard but will still take place in the same universe as the series.

At E3 2014, during Electronic Arts' press conference, BioWare showed a special video filled with concept artwork and footage with the upcoming Mass Effect experience, without actually confirming just how it relates to the current series.

While talking with GameTrailers, a BioWare representative has shed some light on the current state of the game and how the team at Montreal is coming to grips with the Frostbite 3 engine and really nailing down the core pillars of the series, in cooperation with franchise director Casey Hudson.

"For Mass Effect it's an all-new journey, beyond Commander Shepard, beyond his story. It's exciting because the team in Montreal is really killing it with Frostbite. They're working hard. Casey [Hudson] and the Mass Effect leads are working well with them to make sure they're getting the fundamental tenets of the IP down and they're just going for it."

While the developer couldn't get into too much detail about how the new game sits on the timeline of the series, he did emphasize that nods and references for the Commander Shepard series would be present in order to delight fans.

"I can't get into that too much. We have a pretty cool idea for how we're going to carry on, keep the trilogy separate but at the same time give some nods to fans who've enjoyed the trilogy in the past. That's all going to come out soon."

The studio also mentioned that some iconic races will make a return, starting with the Krogans, as the concept artwork even showed such an alien character.

"Definitely returning races. It's Mass Effect so it wouldn't be a Mass Effect game without certain races. Krogans, we've shown a Krogan today. The technology that makes a Krogan look so good is just off the charts. It's amazing."
