History seems right. BioWare has created the two role playing games that managed to capture the atmosphere of Star Wars better than any game out there, the Knights of the Old Republic series. Only The Force Unleashed seems like a serious contender to take that crown away. And BioWare also signed a new licensing deal with LucasArts back in October 2007.

So it seemed clear to most fans that BioWare, after the release of its upcoming Dragon Age role playing game, which is set to debut around April 2009, would then begin development on a new Star Wars based title, which many thought would be a MMO.

But Electronic Arts, which now owns BioWare, released a statement earlier in the year saying that there was no ongoing project to create a Star Wars MMO and that fans should limit their speculation. Like that is ever going to happen.

Now, Ray Muzyka, the guy that heads BioWare, has told Joystiq that, when it comes to original intellectual property versus licensed intellectual property, "you can expect both kinds from BioWare in the future". So, the door is still open for the company to try and create a new Star Wars game.

However, it looks like BioWare has a lot on its plate right now. On one hand, it has just released the Mass Effect version for PC, after the game proved to be a good seller on the Xbox 360, so a part of the team will provide patches and maybe even more content for the game, on both gaming platforms.

On the other hand, the future holds more development work on Dragon Age, which is billed as being the "spiritual" successor of Baldur's Gate, the game series which revitalized the role playing genre. So it might be that we will not see any official announcement regarding BioWare's new projects until early in 2009, when Dragon Age nears completion.
