Web developers who want to build applications by leveraging the API for Microsoft’s search engine can now access, download and use a new version of the Bing API SDK. The latest version of the software development kit for the Bing Application Programming Interface went live on the Microsoft Download Center on July 14, 2009 and is currently up for grabs. Via the Software Development Kit Microsoft is essentially offering a Compiled HTML Help file but also the code samples necessary to create applications with the Bing API.

“The Bing API Software Development Kit provides: A Compiled HTML Help file that documents core concepts, available protocols and SourceTypes, and reference information necessary for developing applications with the Bing API. 65 code samples covering each of three protocols (JSON, XML, and SOAP) for each SourceType in multiple languages (JavaScript for JSON, Visual Basic and C# for XML and SOAP),” revealed Roopali Kaujalgi, program manager, Bing API.

Microsoft killed Live Search at the start of June 2009 with the introduction of Bing. In just one month the search engine managed to gather 8% more unique users compared to its precursor, but also to attract more attention from webmasters and developers. Starting with the end of the past month devs can turn to the Bing Toolbox in order to access tools and resources designed to make their development jobs easier.

One excellent place to exercise your development skills is Microsoft’s Will Code for Green contest. The Redmond company will continue to accept submissions through August 12, 2009, and it is looking for applications built with the Bing API.

“Bing API, Version 2.0 redefines the meaning of Search Engine Web Service. With expanded protocol and SourceType support, strongly-typed data, enhanced developer portal, and unlimited traffic access, this latest version offers developers the opportunity to put the traditional ten-blue-results-on-a-page behind them,” Microsoft informed.
