Ready the popcorn and the gummy bears! Or whatever else you enjoy munching while watching TV. The 17th season of Dancing With the Stars will debut on ABC this coming September 16, and odds are it'll be the series' most entertaining.

Wired tells us that, for some reason, producers have asked Bill Nye the Science Guy to compete. What's even more interesting is that he said “yes.”

If you listen carefully enough, you might be able to hear quite a lot of socks being knocked off by this piece of news.

As it turns out, Bill Nye has agreed to take part in the competition not because he feels that the time has come for him to explore his artistic side, but because he wants to get more people interested in science and space exploration.

“In order for us to carry out our mission to get the world – our world – excited about and supportive of space exploration, we need to engage people everywhere.”

“The show is watched by millions. I’ll be there as your CEO of The Planetary Society and a student of Carl Sagan,” Bill Nye reportedly explained in a blog post.

“As unusual as this may seem, I believe we can broaden awareness of the Society and thereby humankind’s exploration of the Cosmos one ballroom dance at a time,” he added.

I don't know about you, but I for one am certain that the Science Guy will put on quite a show.
