A 29-year-old political strategist from North Carolina has been fatally stabbed by her husband's best friend, serving as the best man to their wedding.

Jamie Hahn was killed in her home in North Raleigh on Wednesday, April 24. Her attacker, who attended her wedding in 2009, attempted suicide afterwards.

“Jamie lost her struggle to live this morning. [...] We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter and friend. We all lost a pure and brave spirit,” the grieving family stated.

The Raleigh News Observer mentions that the attacker, 31-year-old Jonathan Broyhill, worked for the consulting company that she started, Sky Blue Strategies.

Those close to the investigation reveal that the killing has been motivated by financial gain, possibly by Broyhill's wish to conceal fraudulent transactions involving clients' campaign funds.

“Some of the things that Jon said about the campaign finances were inconsistent with other information,” client and former Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller explains.

“It’s probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances. I think it’s bound to be part of the investigation of Jon’s motive,” he notes.

“Obviously, we’ll have someone look at bank records and (FEC) reports and see if people shown on the reports were paid,” Miller adds.

Broyhill has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and stands to be arrested for Hahn's murder.

The victim's 27-year-old husband, Nation Hahn has also been stabbed but has incurred only minor injuries, being already released from the hospital.

“I have no idea what I am going to do without @jamiehahn. She was my center, my rock and my soulmate,” he wrote on Twitter.

“[She] believed in justice, opportunity and fairness for all. She loved politics, and she saw the Democratic Party as the path to realize her ideals,” the victim's family comments.
