Siano Mobile Silicon, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for Mobile Digital TV has announced that its SMS1010 multi-standard TV receiver chip, a high performance, low power single chip receiver has been selected by Benq, Taiwan's leading electronics maker, for enabling MDTV in its 3G and 2.5G mobile phones.

Siano and Benq have also announced their joint participation in the DVB-H commercial trial that is currently taking place in Taiwan. During the trial Benq is using its P51 smartphones that include DVB-H SDIO cards, based on the Siano chip. The trial is being carried out by a number of companies including mobile operators CHT (Chunghwa Telecomm), TWM (Taiwan Mobile), phone manufacturers Benq, Motorola and others.

"The purpose of the DVB-H trial in Taiwan, in addition to evaluating the coverage and network structures, and the DVB-H equipment and terminals is also to collect the end user feedback, and make the necessary preparations for the expected commercial roll-out of DVB-H," said Yuan-Hui Hu, President of PTS. "Therefore, it is extremely important that a world leading made-in-Taiwan brand such as BenQ participates in the trial, added Yuan-Hui Hu.

According to Benq, picking Siano's solution was an easy choice, after their comprehensive qualifying evaluation. Benq has also become the fourth official sponsor for UEFA's Euro 2008 earlier this year. The soccer tournament is expected to accelerate the deployment of DVB-H in Europe and the rest of the world.

The two companies will be joining industry leaders including the National Communication Council (NCC) of Taiwan, PTS, Telecom Italia Mobile, NDS, Marvell, Zoran, InterVideo, CyberLink, and others in a discussion regarding Mobile TV at the Taipei International Convention Center in Taiwan.
