“Sherlock” star proposed to theater actress Sophie Hunter, broke the news in a traditional ad in The Times

How very posh! British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known best for his role on BBC One’s “Sherlock” series and as the villain from “Star Trek Into Darkness,” to name just two of his most high profile recent roles, is engaged and broke the news in an ad in The Times.

Earlier this year, reports started making the rounds that the actor, who is always very careful to keep most aspects of his personal life private, was dating theater actress Sophie Hunter.

As it turns out, she is the lucky lady who will get to walk down the aisle with Cumberbatch – and that sound you’re hearing right now is the sound of millions of fangirl hearts breaking.

Benedict Cumberbatch the celebrity, a lesson in pure class

Though he’s one of the hottest actors of the moment and an A-list celebrity already, Benedict Cumberbatch knows where to draw the line when it comes to the amount of information about himself he shares with the world.

He’s already made peace with the fact that he’s lost some of his privacy when he made it big in Hollywood, but he’s decided that the compromise is worth it – as long as he makes efforts to exercise control over what he shares with the world and what he doesn’t.

Don’t ever expect Cumberbatch to come forward and announce from the front page of a magazine that he’s engaged, or to sell his wedding pictures or to give cringe-worthy details of his love life and whatnot, like countless other celebrities do (actors, too) when it comes to promoting their work.

He’s always handled aspects of his personal life with class and discretion, and he continues to do so. The ad in The Times (which you can find in the second photo in the gallery) is the old-fashioned way of announcing an engagement. Again, how posh of him!

If you’re thinking or hoping this is some hoax, don’t. “The actor’s engagement to Sophie Hunter, a theatre director, is announced in The Times today,” the publication says in the online issue. The ad runs on page 57 of the print edition.

Cumberbatch never made a secret of how badly he wanted a family

Last year, when the Julian Assange biopic “The Fifth Estate” came out and Cumberbatch was busy promoting it, he would often talk about how badly he wanted to settle down, get married and have babies, even though, as per his own admission, he hadn’t yet found the perfect girl for him, he hadn’t found The One.

Just last week, the actor was featured in the latest edition of Elle Magazine (the gorgeous photo attached to this article was included in the photospread) and he reiterated all that, though he toned it down a bit too.

He wouldn’t say if he was dating someone, but he admitted that being instantly recognizable as he is made it hard for him not to doubt a woman’s intentions.

However, he remained confident that he would have his dream family when he found the woman to make him fall hopelessly in love. “Without using words like ‘marriage’ ‘children’ and ‘family’ – although I have just used those words – put it this way: I hope I’ve got other people to look back with me at that point. I hope I’m surrounded by family,” he said.

It looks like he’s on his way.
