Apple said there were just 9 recorded cases

Just when we reported that Bendgate was a bit overblown, someone hit us up with potential evidence that there are more than just a few isolated incidents.

Apparently, there are many more Bendgate cases than Apple revealed. However, it’s appropriate to give them the benefit of the doubt, considering the time of their statement and the number of iPhones shipped in the interim. But here’s the story, according to oneofthenine.com.

The Bendgate site

Someone fed up with the reports defending Apple decided to make a web site to allow everyone who experienced the issue to upload evidence that the iPhone 6 Plus is indeed prone to bending.

“Customers have reported that some new iPhone 6/6+s have developed a bend during regular phone type usage. Apple’s response has been to play down the problem. With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus,” says the site’s creator.

“Just 9? Well, let’s see if we can find all 9 of these people ….. or maybe more. If you are 1 of the 9 who has a bent phone then we’d love you to post a pic here. Click the button over on the right to quickly share,” the site states.

At the time of this writing, as many as 67 customers have uploaded photos and a story of their Bendgate experience. Considering that there could be many more users who haven’t even heard of the site, the number of bent iPhone 6 devices in the wild could be a lot higher.

The key takeaway

You might be tempted to assume Apple was wrong and the customer is right. Unfortunately, we have to reserve judgment until we can fully confirm that this is a widespread problem.

First of all, let’s not forget that Apple said it had recorded 9 bending cases about a week ago. That’s seven extra days during which many more iPhones have been shipped. Secondly, even 100 devices out of the 20 million estimated to have been sold is still not enough to make Bendgate a thing. Surely out of 20 million, 100 can be considered accidents.

In the end, we’re still left with a big fat question mark floating above our heads. But we can’t ignore the fact that Bendgate not only isn’t going away, but it might actually make a huge comeback as more and more users receive their orders.
