The free-to-play MOBA is getting better every day

Smite's second season has recently kicked off, and developer Hi-Rez Studios has just added its first new deity, Bellona, the Goddess of War.

Smite is a third-person multiplayer online battle arena game that offers an experience that's somewhat different from the genre's colossi, Valve's Dota 2 and Riot Games' League of Legends, in the sense that you get much more direct control over your champion, and there is an increased reliance on skill shots.

The game also has a friendlier community, largely due to the fact that it's not as popular and much younger than its rivals. The fact that its tutorial system is pretty good and you don't have to do a lot of head scratching when first picking it up also helps.

A brand new god to pilot into battle

Bellona is a Roman deity, the sister of the more popular Mars, an ultimate soldier that can make use of a variety of different weapons and fit into several niches on the battlefield.

The new god has targeted attacks, area of effect abilities, healing, as well as protection and damage buffs, which means that she'll pretty well-rounded but also that she can truly shine only in the hands of an experienced brawler.

Bellona is best used against enemy gods that focus on basic attacks, due to her unique arsenal of abilities, which enable her to absorb and reflect basic attacks and even disarm opponents and render them unable to use basic attacks.

She can make use of three different weapons sets, a sword and a shield, a hammer and a flail, each one being equipped after using the appropriate ability.

Her ultimate, Eagle's Rally, allows her to leap to an area of the map and plant a Roman flag that offers allies a slight buff to damage and some protection against attacks, while damaging and stunning any nearby enemies.

As usual, Hi-Rez studios put together a neat trailer, covering both Bellona's background and highlighting the best way to use her in combat, which you can see below.
