AS long as Baldur's Gate is well received by players

The remade Baldur’s Gate titles are still some time from launch, but the developers at Beamdog are already thinking about how they could use the same processes to remake the Icewind Dale franchise, another much loved top-down party-based role-playing game.

Trent Oster, one of the leaders of Beamdog who has previously worked at BioWare, stated on Twitter that, “The topic of Icewind Dale has come up a number of times. We are interested, but first we need to succeed.”

It seems pretty likely that, if the first remakes are successful, the team will try and use the technology that they have developed to update the Infinity Engine and the content in order to remake other titles before tackling the more ambitious project of creating a whole new game set in the same universe.

Speaking about a possible remake for Icewind Dale, Oster has suggested that the developers will use the codebase and the various classes included in the Throne of Baal expansion for Baldur’s Gate 2 as the basis for re-designing the title.

The first Icewind Dale video game was launched in 2000 and was developed by Black Isle.

The game is best known for allowing players the freedom to create their entire party of six characters, where rival role-playing series Baldur’s Gate relied in pre-created characters with distinct personalities.

Icewind Dale II was launched in 2002 and was the last full official title to be created using the Infinity Engine.

Some see it as the final game in the so-called Golden Age of Role-Playing Games.

Speaking about Baldur’s Gate 3, the Beamdog leader added, “If we were to do a we would probably develop a new engine and tool path. Any project we do will be isometric. Iso makes tactical gameplay possible.”

The remade Baldur’s Gate titles should arrive on both the PC and on the iPad during the summer.
