There are a lot of trends these days in the video game industry, with one of the most interesting ones being free-to-play titles, which are endorsed by ads and/or microtransactions. Electronic Arts is the most recent company to try this model, in its latest Battlefield Heroes downloadable game.

The title, which has recently exited the closed beta stage, is available for download at this address, and guarantees a lot of fun, as you saw in our impressions of the closed beta stage. Battlefield Heroes pits together two factions, the Royal and National armies, which fight against one another on a variety of maps and use a big number of weapons. The interesting character classes can be customized by employing numerous trinkets and types of apparel.

It seems that the free game has generated so much excitement, that it has already reached one million user accounts around the world. The wide variety of customization options placed at the disposal of the players is still making tens of thousands of new ones register everyday, according to Electronic Arts.

“The team is really proud to have hit 1 million registrations at this early stage,” Ben Cousins, general manager, Battlefield Heroes Team, said. “Creating a character and gameplay experience that is totally yours is what sets this game apart – your hero can be anything from a bazooka-toting pirate, a grenade-throwing ninja or even a mime assassin!”

Have you gotten a chance to play Battlefield Heroes? Given the wide variety of choices when designing your character and the fact that regular players aren't at an extreme disadvantage as opposed to those who buy new and better weapons, the title is certainly something that any shooter fan that wants something with which to unwind should try.
