This game doesn't play fair

Battlefield may not be a franchise that's known for its single-player campaign, but Bad Company did its best to change that. And while all previous installments in the series, like 1942, Vietnam and Battlefield 2, to name some of them, had a single-player option, it was nothing more than the multiplayer matches with AI-controlled bots, in both your team and in the opposition's. But Bad Company 2 looks like it will have a proper single-player experience, and from the trailer DICE released for the game on Friday, it seems that it's going to be a blast.

It's really nice to see the game finally getting its single player, if not detailed, then at least teased, with nothing but the multiplayer ever discussed by its developer. We saw the initial discussions DICE started connected to how Infinity Ward handled the PC multiplayer for Modern Warfare 2, and how it wouldn't do the same. Then, there was the PS3 multiplayer beta, the Squad Deathmatch mode revealed, and then the PC beta announced, along with the loss of the mod-tools and the restriction of the server files.

With all that, some might have thought BC2 wouldn't have a single-player campaign at all, or that if it did, it would be something shallow. While we can't say for sure what it will be like, if the game follows the same lines as the trailer, this could actually be interesting. While not as cinematic as other EA trailers, say, like the ones from BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect 2, the title's attitude is entirely different, so a dramatic trailer would fall out of place.

In a pretty cut-and-dry format, the trailer introduces the Bad Company 2 cast and their mission to find and preferably destroy or recover a super weapon. But it doesn't seem to be your run-of-the-mill nuke or chemical weapon. And if the trailer gives off a bit of tension here, it's all Bad Company from here on out. A bit of rock rhythm, some unorthodox methods promised, loads of action, a far more "fun" approach to the game and a far less theatrical-tragic setting. Bad company 2 may promise to shine with its multiplayer, but the single player doesn't look that shabby at all.
