DICE, as the developer, and Electronic Arts, as the publisher, have announced that they are working on an expansion pack for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, their first person shooter, which will take players to the war in Vietnam, allowing them to battle other gamers while joining either the United States Marine Corps or the North Vietnamese Army.

The launch date is set for winter and the Vietnam expansion pack will be arriving for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC. The two companies working on the fresh content have not talked about how much it will cost.

The studio says that the Frostbite engine, which was used in Bad Company 2 to offer complete destruction of the environments the battles took place, will now be even better at creating the background of the Vietnamese jungle, as well as the iconic weapons and vehicles that the warriors of the era were using. It promises “punishing jungles, powerful air invasions, and guerilla tactics.”

The Vietnam expansion pack will offer more persistent rewards for players, unlocks, vehicles, awards, Achievements and Trophies. There will be four entirely new maps based upon Vietnam that will be playable in all the classic Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer game modes.

Electronic Arts and DICE have acknowledged that Bad Company 2 will never beat Modern Warfare 2 in terms of popularity but the two are planning the expansion pack as a way to extend the life of their first person shooter and give them as many options as possible when it comes to their multiplayer battles.

The two parties involved are also working on the creation of a new Medal of Honor title set to come out in the fall, before the Vietnam expansion pack, in order to challenge the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops for the title of first person shooter of the year.
