Gamers will get packages of items at certain ranks

The development team at DICE says that it has completely changed the way weapon and item unlocks are working on Battlefield 4 in order to make sure that the multiplayer is better balanced and more fun.

Gamers will be able to get access to new hardware by simply using those that are part of the same family.

The company states in an official blog post that, "if you’re all about shotgun action, using shotguns (and scoring with them) will unlock more shotguns and shotgun accessories for you to play with. Similarly, if you use a lot of sniper rifles and amass respectable scores with them, you will unlock more varieties of sniper rifles, scopes, and barrels for them."

Classes themselves do not matter, so gamers can, if they want to, create a Support character that relies on shotguns, even if that might sound counter-intuitive.

All the templates included in Battlefield 4 also come with better equipment when first selected, in order to make sure that matches are better balanced and the various included vehicles also have already unlocked abilities.

DICE is also bringing Battlepacks, packages of hardware that are added to a player character when he reaches a certain Rank.

The studio says, "At certain ranks, you’ll get a handful of items, but you’ll never know exactly in what order you’ll receive them. If you played the Beta, you might have seen these in action already, since the first Battlepack is awarded to players at Rank 3 (and later at set intervals tied to your Rank)."

The bundles will include weapon accessories, weapon paints, vehicle paints, soldier camos, dog tags, XP boosts and knife designs.

DICE does not want to affect the balance of Battlefield 4 and that means that most of the new items that players get access to will be cosmetic in nature.
