The special Levolution mechanic in Battlefield 4, which will allow users to destroy big chunks of a multiplayer map, will feature both big and small changes to the actual level, from tearing down skyscrapers to shooting fire extinguishers or powering down a building.

The special destruction mechanic in Battlefield 4 received a name earlier this year, in the form of Levolution, in order to truly emphasize just how much of a multiplayer map can be changed by the actions of the players.

After showing off some huge changes that are possible through Levolution, DICE's Patrick Bach has talked with the Xbox Wire about the special system.

"Levolution is a design concept we came up with in the studio that speaks to the way players can alter the gameplay experience. It’s their actions, both big and small, that drive the action. We’ve created these dynamic environments that react to your every move. Some things are massive like reducing a skyscraper to rubble or flooding an entire level in real-time. "

"Also, in the Paracel Storm map we showcased at Gamescom, players can destroy the anchor to a warship docked off-shore causing it to crash on land and giving their team access to the anti-air cannons onboard."

Besides these big sweeping changes to a map that drastically alter the gameplay of that online match, players can also use the Levolution system to implement smaller changes during a game.

"In addition, there are other actions that are smaller but hugely impact the game like shooting fire extinguishers to distract enemies or cutting the power of a building to blind opponents. It’s through our advanced Frostbite 3 engine that we’re able to deliver these game-changing new features to the game."

Battlefield 4 is set to debut in October for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and in November for PS4 and Xbox One.
