Those who want the game need to subscribe to PS Plus

Video game developer DICE, publisher Electronic Arts and the team at Sony announce that all those who own a PlayStation 3 home console can check out a free version of Battlefield 4, which can be played for a 20-hour period by subscribers to the PlayStation Plus service.

The official announcement explains that, “The free trial version contains the full Battlefield 4 base game and will be available for 20 playable hours from the first moment you start playing. To download, simply head to PlayStation Store, search for Battlefield 4, and locate the trial version.”

All the downloadable content that has been delivered for Battlefield 4 is not included in the free trial offer, which means that those who take advantage of it will not get the full multiplayer experience.

The 20-hour period is pretty generous and offers plenty of time for interested gamers to check out most of the single-player campaign and try out the wide variety of multiplayer modes that DICE has created for the first-person shooter.

The problem is that the time frame is much too small to actually become proficient in multiplayer, even if they take a look at online tutorials before launching the game and visit the Boot Camp.

The developers are saying that, “The dynamic multiplayer gameplay ensures that no two matches are the same. Whether you’re parachuting down to an enemy control point or attaching C4 to a tank, unpredictable Battlefield moments will keep you on the edge of your seat.”

It’s unclear why the free access to Battlefield 4 for those who subscribe to PlayStation Plus is being introduced after the Memorial Day weekend rather than before it.

The three-day-long period would have offered gamers plenty of time to check out the game and could have generated some solid sales for Electronic Arts.

There are two more downloadable content packs set to be launched for Battlefield 4, one of them named Dragon’s Teeth, and they are both created by a team in Los Angeles.

The core DICE studio is rumored to be working on the next installment in the shooter franchise, which could be revealed during the coming E3 2014 event.

Rumors are also saying that a new spin-off linked to the Battlefield series, called SWAT, is at the moment in development at the Visceral Games team and could be launched in the fall to compete with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
