Developer Gearbox and publisher 2K Games announce that they are working on a new intellectual property called Battleborn, which is set to use the core mechanics of the shooter genre and is set to be launched on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

The title is described as ambitious and will be created by many of the core developers who also produced the Borderlands series.

Battleborn is set to mix a highly stylized visual style and fast-paced first-person shooter action, with a cast of diverse heroes that gamers can choose to lead into battle, each complete with their own personalities and powers.

The game is set in the distant future and will use an entirely new science fiction universe with fantasy elements.

Gearbox says that it plans to introduce both a cooperative campaign with complex narrative elements and competitive multiplayer matches.

Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, states, "If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter. As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created."

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games, adds, "Battleborn represents the combined might of the development and publishing teams behind the success of Borderlands 2, which to date has sold-in more than 9-million units worldwide and has become 2K’s highest-selling game of all time," said. "The size, scope, and ambition of Battleborn are unlike any other title in 2K’s history, and the result is a defining next-gen co-operative experience."

The company has made Battleborn available for pre-order on the official site, and it seems that the game will be launched during the fiscal year that ends on March 31 of 2016.

The two companies are saying that more details will be offered about the title in the coming months, but it is unlikely that fans will be able to get their hands on a playable version before next year.

Randy Pitchford has long claimed that his company is eager to create an entirely new game universe for its next project, but it's unclear how original the world of Battleborn will be.

At the moment, Gearbox is still involved in the new Borderlands prequel, but it's likely that most of the resources of the company are now focused on the creation of the new title.
