In the United Kingdom

The first big release of the autumn season, Batman: Arkham Asylum from Eidos, has managed to show off its colors by rocketing to the top of the United Kingdom videogames chart

The game is likely doing well because of the solid combat, which is both fluid and violent, the seamless stealth elements and the way it manages to capture some of the Batman atmosphere that made The Dark Knight such a huge hit with movie goers when it was released.

The top position from last week, Wii Sports Resort from Nintendo, has slipped down to number two and the whole chart seems to have slid with it. Ashes Cricket 2009 from Codemasters is still doing well at number three, on the back of England's victory in the latest test match against Australia. Wolfenstein, the latest first person shooter from Raven and Activision, missed its chance to reach the top and is now sliding into obscurity at number four with Wii Fit down in fifth spot ahead of the impending release of its follow up, Wii Fit Plus.

Call of Duty: World at War is proving its popularity at number six, while Mario Kart Wii is in a holding pattern at number 7. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 from EA Sports is at number eight, while LEGO Batman: The Videogame from Warner Bros. Interactive is making a reappearance in the chart on the back of Arkham Asylum. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is closing down the top ten, Activision driving up expectations for Modern Warfare 2, which might just be the biggest videogame of the year.

Meanwhile, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is at number 11, down from six, Fight Night Round 4 is at 13, while Prototype is at 16. Expect more familiar faces to leave the chart in the coming weeks.
