Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that it has tasked WayForward Technologies Inc. to develop a new Batman-themed game for the Nintendo Wii home console and the DS line of handhelds. The title will be officially named Batman: The Brave and the Bold the Videogame and will be an action adventure allowing the player to control the popular hero as he takes on a variety of villains seen in the television series.

Warner Bros. is saying that in addition to Batman, players will also be able to take control of his sidekick Robin, the Green Lantern, the Blue Beetle or Aquaman. Those who pick up both the Wii and the DS versions of the game will also be able to connect them in order to unlock Bat-Mite, one of the weirdest characters in the Batman comics universe. He can be used in both games and be great in a cooperative experience.

The developers have confirmed that the grapnel gun and the Batarang will be included in the game and that a variety of areas will be visited, ranging from mysterious laboratories to alien planets and to abandoned underground lairs. It's not clear whether Batman specific vehicles will be included.

Samantha Ryan, the senior vice president of Development and Production at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, stated that “Batman: The Brave and the Bold the Videogame further illustrates the diverse appeal of the Batman brand and the gameplay is a fun, vibrant extension of the animated series. The game’s co-op play offers kids, families and Batman fans an interactive way of experiencing the cartoon’s iconic characters.”

The announcement comes just as Warner Bros. unveiled having acquired a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, the outfit, which put out the much lauded Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame that took everyone by surprise in 2009.
