Specialists speaking at this year's meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Boston said that men who wished to father children would do best to stay clear of bacon and other types of red meat.

This is because, according to recent investigations, these foods harm male fertility. Specifically, they lower the count of male gametes, and therefore reduce a couple's chances to conceive.

By comparison, it appears that fish consumption improves male fertility by upping the number of male gametes, Medical Daily reports.

“We found the effect of processed meat intake lowered quality and fish raised quality,” Dr. Myriam Afeiche with the Harvard School of Public Health explained.

The Harvard researchers now saying that bacon and other similar foods harm male fertility base their claims on data collected while looking into the medical records and dietary habits of 156 men who were trying to conceive.

Of these men, the ones that ate less than half a portion of processed meat on a daily basis had a higher percentage of normal shaped male gametes than the ones who ate higher amounts of these foods, i.e. 7.2% and 5.5% respectively.
