Kali Linux 1.0.9, a more mature, secure, and enterprise-ready version of BackTrack Linux, has been released by Offensive Security and it features a number of new packages and regenerated images.

The developers of Kali Linux have been constantly working on the operating system and they have brought some changes to it, on the heels of the Black Hat and DEF CON conferences that just ended.

There are a lot of Linux distributions built for penetration testing and digital forensics, but not all of the them are maintained. These types of distros need to provide high quality tools and they are much harder to develop.

The predecessor of Kali Linux was called Backtrack, and believe it or not, it's still one of the most downloaded distributions. This is rather weird because Backtrack is no longer maintained and supported and its developers have moved to other projects, such as Kali Linux.

It will take a while until Kali Linux manages to take over the mantle from Backtrack, but users need to know that Kali is ready now and that it's much better that anything else you download right now.

“Now that we have caught our breath after the Black Hat and DEF CON conferences, we have put aside some time to fix an annoying bug in our 1.0.8 ISO releases related to outdated firmware as well as regenerate fresh new ARM and VMWare images (courtesy of Offensive Security) for our new 1.0.9 release.”

“We have also included two more images to our Kali ARM image collection for the Odroid U3 and Cubox-i ARM computers. Each of these have interesting use cases as both their small form factor and specs are formidable. All of these news scripts can be found in our Offensive Security Github page,” the developers say in the official announcement.

The developers have also explained that the new Raspberry Pi Kali image now supports the new B+ Model, which was released a few weeks ago, and that it should work out of the box.

Users of this distro will also find a new website called Kali Linux Tools, which should provide details information about all the tools included in the distribution, a description of the tools, links to the tools homepage, and more.

Kali Linux 1.0.9 is distributed as DVD ISO images featuring the GNOME desktop environment and supporting the x86, AMD64, and ARM architectures. You can download Kali Linux 1.0.9 right now from Softpedia.
