14 DAY TRIAL // I would like to preface this blog by saying that, as big as the eyes of the baby pygmy slow loris pictured above might be, mine got even bigger the first time I caught a glimpse of it.
The tiny creature now lives at Paington Zoo in England, where it was born earlier this year, and it is presently looked after by staff at this facility. Zoo Borns informs that keepers had to step in and take the baby slow loris under their care due to the fact that its mom abandoned it shortly after birth.
By the looks of it, the female which delivered this little fellow was a first-time mom, which might explain why it failed to properly care for its offspring. The baby was one of a set of twins, but, unfortunately, its sibling did not survive.
The same source details that, at the time when it arrived into this world, the baby pygmy slow loris weighed a little more than your average CD. Presently, it tips the scale at 30 grams (about 1.05 ounces), and as many as seven keepers take turns feeding it on a regular basis.
The tiny creature chiefly feeds on a milk replacer for the time being but appears to also be interested in solids such as mashed boiled sweet potatoes.
According to wildlife researchers, this species is native to South East Asia. Due to habitat loss and the pet trade, the overall numbers of wild pygmy slow lorises has declined to a considerable extent in recent years. Hence, the species is listed as vulnerable.
