Towards the end of August, a female panda living at Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC, delivered a healthy cub.

Recent news on the topic says that, after carrying out several genetic tests, veterinarians learned that the baby panda is a girl. Yup, time to go shopping for pink balloons!

Live Science reports that, besides figuring out whether the cub is a male or a female, vets also managed to identify its father. Long story short, a paternity test showed that Tian Tian was the one that fathered this cub.

As previously reported, this baby panda was born through artificial insemination.

Because they used male gametes from two different pandas, i.e. Tian Tian and Gao Gao, vets had to wait for a paternity test to be carried out in order to determine which panda deserves being offered a cigar.

The panda cub and its mom are now living together in a den. Zoo keepers are keeping a close eye on them with the help of a camera that has been installed inside their enclosure.
