The baby agouti's mom failed to produce enough milk to feed both its offspring

I have to admit I have never given much thought to the idea of becoming a zoo keeper. However, now that I know that, were I to embrace such a career, I would get to take care of little fellows such as the baby agouti pictured above, I am considering the possibility.

Zoo Borns reports that the tiny creature and its sibling were born at Zoo Krefeld in Germany, in early March. Despite being ready and willing to look after both of them, their mom eventually failed to do so.

This is because it was unable to produce enough milk to feed both its offspring, the same source details. Hence, it was agreed that the best thing to do was to separate one of the baby agouti from its mom, and allow the latter to take care of just one bundle of joy.

Despite the fact that it is being hand-raised, the tiny agouti, whose name is Flo, appears to be thriving. Thus, its caretakers say that it has been putting on weight at a rate of about 0.07-0.1 ounces (2-3 grams) per day, and that it is very much healthy and active.

It is possible that, once the baby agouti starts eating solids, it will be reunited with its mom and its sibling. Until then, it will have to settle for interacting with zoo employees alone.
