Aimed at providing a glimpse of the first electrically powered production cars from the new BMW i sub-brand, the i8 plug-in hybrid is currently on display at the IAA 2011.

Despite the fact that the German automaker unveiled the car for a couple of months now, anything wearing a BMW badge is worth taking a look at, especially when it boasts that futuristic looks and features.

“As the world’s leading premium car manufacturer, our aim is to offer customers purpose-built electric-drive cars as well,” said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at the vehicle’s premiere back in July.

“The BMW i8 Concept is the sports car for a new generation – pure, emotional and sustainable,” added Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board responsible for Development, without a trace of modesty.

The i8 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds and boasts fuel consumption of under three litres per 100 km. Top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h.

Its plug-in hybrid drive with a system output of 260 kW allows a range of up to 35 kilometres in electric mode, which is pretty much sufficient for most everyday journeys. However, a high-performance three-cylinder petrol engine also comes into play if needed.

Scheduled to enter production in 2014, the i8 will join the i3 at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany. The manufacturer says vehicle production will be CO2 neutral and will draw on renewable resources. The company is currently investigating the possibility of building its own wind turbines on the plant site.

But enough with the chit-chat. See the BMW i8 in a set of live photos from Frankfurt, courtesy of autoevolution:
