In light of the close launch of the iPad, on April 3, Actuate, the BIRT’s manufacturer, renewed the main information on the product unveiled in February, 2010. The software was designed as an iPhone native app and embodies an eclipse-based development environment for presenting compelling data visualizations on the web. It can be accessed via BIRT onDemand on a fee-free trial basis, according to BusinessWire.

BIRT Mobile Viewer and BIRT onDemand (BIRT iServer), which generates and runs BIRT content on different devices in a secure manner and according to a schedule, enable users of the iPhone, iPod touch and the very-soon-to-come iPad to view and work with BIRT content anywhere.

Nobby Akiha, senior vice-president of marketing at Actuate, claims that, “Our customer’s end users are increasingly mobile in their work environments, and BIRT Mobile Viewer on the iPhone is a major breakthrough in addressing the trend toward accessing interactive enterprise information in a mobile environment.”

BIRT-generated content on the iPhone can be accessed and managed with the BIRT Mobile Viewer app. The iPhone users are invited to browse, select and view any BIRT content without any modification of the initial one. Next, as the app fully lines up to iServer’s security rules, the users will see only what they are entitled to see. They can change viewing parameters and data filters for BIRT content directly on their iPhone, in order to switch the context and focus on their needs.

BIRT content can be flagged for the default portrait or landscape viewing mode to ensure an optimal viewing. For granular views of summarized information, links and charts can simply be tapped in BIRT content. If one needs to return to the home screen, all they have to do is shake the device. For an increased usability, a set of universally applicable examples was included.

Michael Fauscette, group vice president, Software Business Solutions, IDC states, “Apple’s iPhone deserves credit for setting a new standard in delivering content and collaboration applications to an increasingly mobile workforce. With increased smartphone adoption, enterprises like Actuate are moving quickly to bring their solutions to the new desktop. By accessing the combination of a highly interactive user interface, location awareness and native functionality, enterprise users can experience desktop visibility and increased productivity while they’re away from the office.”
