Users from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are targeted

A curious piece of malware has been infecting the PCs of users from various European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

There are few details about this mysterious piece of malware, but according to those whose computers have been infected, it appears that it’s some sort of a BIOS malware.

Experts from ThreatTrack Security say  that the threat is similar to ransomware. However, it doesn’t demand the payment of a fine.

Instead, when victims boot up their infected computers, they’re presented with an image of a female DJ and the message “YOU STEAL MUSIC, I LOCK YOUR PC.”

The image is actually a piece of ANSI art.

It’s uncertain how the malware is distributed, but a likely scenario is that it’s downloaded from BitTorrent websites.

The big question is: who is behind it? A random malware author looking to have fun, or an angry music writer who is fed up with his work being pirated?
